I bought some delicious dark chocolate with dried cranberries and some chocolate coins (for some reason, I can never pass up a chocolate coin!) from this chocolate extravaganza at the Albert Cuyp market in Amsterdam. When traveling, I’m always drawn to food displays in outdoor markets and bakery windows. Part of the charm of these displays is not only anticipating the flavors of what you decide to try, but also their fleetingness. Unlike a piece of art or a piece of pottery, you can’t take this food home with you as a reminder of a place. The memory is created there, on the spot, as you try the fruit or the olives or the bread and take a picture that you will later look at and say: “Rember when we went to that market and had that great chocolate?”

Olives at market in Port d’Andratx, Mallorca, Spain. After learning about olives during an olive oil mill tour in France, we went on an olive-eating binge in Spain.

Hi: We do the same when we travel though we don’t often indulge in buying lots of stuff as we are mostly attracted to the sweets counters so it wouldn’t be good for us. But when we do buy some is sooooo delicious!!! I love markets and food window shopping!

The sweets counters are definitely hard to resist. I ate a few more marshmallows than I had planned.

Ginger flavoured marshmallows?? I didn’t even think about that different flavours existed. I definitely have to make a trip to London… just for those marshmallows!

I’d find these foods hard to resist too! If I’m in London again, I’m going to Fortnum and Masons to buy some ginger marshmallows.

I love it all! Pike Place Market is one of my favorite places in the world, it’s hard not to eat everything there. So many samples and awesome food. My mom just brought me back some chocolate from Barcelona, and it’s awesome, but it’s not the same as being there and getting it myself. Great post and pictures!

One of the greatest joys when travelling is trying all the new foods. I always figure I’m doing so much walking that it cancels out extra intake! That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. Carol.

I think it must be part of our make-up as bloggers. I can’t resist photographing food displays, either. I always feel silly doing it, but they’re some of my favorite pictures. Even if I never sample the food in the shot. But of course, it’s always better when I do. :)

What beautiful photos. I love going to markets when I travel too. I often videotape them with my iphone as I love hearing all the wonderful market sounds when I’m back at home.

Sampling the various foods is always an important highlight for me in world travel – besides the fact that I love to eat, I also enjoy taking home those eating experiences and recreating them in my kitchen. I would have had a hard time passing ANY of these booths by without stopping to taste! I remember a trip I took to the Middle East where I came across a market booth with the largest display of baklava I had ever seen – stacks and rows of every imaginable baklava creation! Even the memory makes me salivate!
Nice write-up, Margaret!
